Mavs Luka Doncic is the Fourth Favorite to win the 2023-2024 NBA MVP Award

The NBA heads into January with a full head of steam, and the NBA MVP Award is starting to garner some attention. The inaugural In-Season Tournament was a smashing success, and now our focus is towards the February All-Star Break as well as the NBA playoffs.

Dallas Mavericks forward Luka Doncic is a 5-1 underdog (+500) to win the coveted award. Still, he’ll have work to do to overtake odds-on favorites and reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers and Nikola Jokic from the Denver Nuggets. Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous Alexander is also slightly ahead of the Mavericks star on the DraftKings betting board.

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid (+220) is having another strong season. He leads the NBA in scoring (34.8 ppg) and is currently enjoying the highest usage rate of his star-studded career (38.4) for the third-seed 76ers.

The 76ers All-Star is enjoying a career-high 6.2 assists while draining a career-high 88.7% shooting from the charity stripe. While Embiid is a dandy to win the MVP,  the man he supplanted is breathing down his neck.

Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokic is a two-time former MVP for the third-seed Nuggets. The Denver big man is less than an assist away from averaging a triple-double on the season and is the straw that stirs the drink in Denver.

Jokic recently recorded his third “perfect” triple-double of his career. While the Serbian native is indeed posting the numbers to win, he may have to average a triple-double to overtake Embiid.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are the second seed in the Western Conference, and guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is a big reason why. The Thunder point guard is third in scoring and steals per night, but his advanced numbers sparkle; Gilgeous-Alexander has per-40-minute career highs in points, rebounds, assists, and true shooting percentage with a career-low turnover rate.

The Thunder star might be in the same boat as Dallas Mavericks forward Luka Doncic; no matter how splashy their numbers are, they won’t likely win unless they lead their respective teams to the top seed in the West.

Doncic is second in the NBA in scoring on the best long-range shooting of his career (37%). Doncic is also enjoying career highs in free-throw shooting and dimes, but his Mavericks are the seventh-seed, and he’ll likely need to lead the Mavs to the top seed to win this year.

Finally, two-time NBA MVP Giannis Antetokuomnpo is the fifth favorite for the second-seed Milwaukee Bucks. Antetokuonmpo has the lowest usage rate over the past two seasons while enjoying his career’s highest true shooting percentage.
