Week 9 Heisman Trophy Watch: McCarthy Takes Slim Lead at BetMGM

We are nine weeks into the 2023 NCAA college football season. With just a handful of weeks remaining before the postseason bowl games, Michigan Wolverines quarterback J.J. McCarthy is the new favorite at BetMGM to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy.

McCarthy overtook Washington Huskies quarterback Michael Penix Jr at the top of the BetMGM 2023 Heisman Trophy leaderboard with a strong performance Saturday against rival Michigan State.

Penix Jr. laid a dud in the Huskies’ 15-7 home victory over upstart Arizona State, and McCarthy is now the betting favorite to become the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner.

J.J. McCarthy QB Michigan Wolverines (+200)

Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy took the top spot away from Penix Jr. after throwing for 287 yards and four scoring strikes in the Wolverines’ 49-0 rout of rival Michigan State. McCarthy has thrown for 1,512 passing yards with 14 TD passes and three interceptions but hasn’t played a full game yet for the undefeated Wolverines.

Next Up: Michigan will be off this week before hosting Purdue on Saturday, November 4.

Michael Penix Jr QB Washington Huskies (+300)

Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. saw his stock fall after chucking two interceptions without a TD pass in Saturday’s 15-7 home victory over Arizona State. It was an obvious letdown after throwing four TD passes during the Huskies’ Week 7 defeat over No. 8 Oregon. Penix is second in the country in passing yards with the fourth-most scoring strikes this season.

Next Up: No. 5 Washington heads to Palo Alto for a Saturday afternoon matchup with 2-5 Stanford.

Jayden Daniels QB LSU Tigers (+600)

LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels jumped to the third spot on the BetMGM 2023 Heisman Trophy betting board after throwing for 279 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers’ 63-0 whitewash over Army. Daniels is third nationally in passing yards and second in the nation in passing touchdowns behind USC quarterback Caleb Williams.

Next Up. No. 19 LSU heads to Tuscaloosa and a matchup with the No. 11 Alabama Crimson Tide.

Jordan Travis QB Florida State Seminoles (+700)

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis continues to hang around the Heisman leaderboard after throwing a pair of touchdown passes and adding 62 rushing yards with a touchdown in the Seminoles’ 38-20 victory over No. 16 Duke. Travis has put up pedestrian stats compared to the others, but FSU is undefeated, and he is their leader.

Next Up: No. 4 FSU heads to Wake Forest for a matchup with the 4-3 Demon Deacons.

Dillon Gabriel QB Oklahoma (+800)

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel threw for 253 yards and three touchdowns in the Sooners’ 31-29 home victory over UCF. Gabriel has thrown for 2131 yards with 19 scoring strikes and is the leader of the undefeated Sooners. His numbers should be much better, but Oklahoma has played too many lopsided games this season.

Up Next: The No. 6 Sooners travel to Kansas for a Saturday matchup with the high-scoring Kansas Jayhawks.
